What's a Life Coach?
If you asked me the question I hear the most, it would have to be this.
What is a life coach? It’s often met with a puzzled look.
Most people have never heard of my profession or know it even exists. So to clear up some misconceptions, I wanted to explain what a life coach is and who they help.
A Life Coach Is Not a Therapist
After I get that first question, I often hear people say, “Oh, so you’re like a therapist?”
Most people need a frame of reference for understanding what I do, so I don’t mind this analogy at all.
While I love therapists, I’ve been to one myself. A life coach is not a therapist. Let me explain.
The Role of a Therapist
When you work with a therapist, they tend to look at your past. They look at patterns in behavior and thinking. That helps them come up with a form of treatment.
Therapists often ask questions but let you find the answers. In that way, they are like a gentle guiding hand to help you look at patterns you may not be aware of yet.
A therapist also helps you work through trauma. They help you unload the baggage of difficult past experiences to help you move on in your daily life.
The role of a therapist focuses on the individual. Your treatment plan often encompasses working through old patterns of thinking. In that way, you make small incremental changes.
The Role of a Life Coach
Rather than peering into your past, a life coach looks at your future.
They help you shed negative beliefs, patterns of thinking, and bad habits. These things hold you back from your true potential.
In this way, they help you go from where you are to where you want to go. You can think of them almost as a tour guide on the journey to achieving your goals.
Some people have negative beliefs about what they can achieve. That creates a glass ceiling for their life.
Glass ceilings can come in the form of relationships. Others may have glass ceilings in their careers. It all depends on the individual.
A life coach helps you shatter your glass ceilings to live a life at your fullest potential. They help you shed your bad habits, negative thoughts, and overwhelming fears.
Life coaches help you create significant changes in your life that lead to extraordinary results.
