Why I Welcome the Grind and You Should Too!
Let’s talk about the grind.
Whether you’re a business owner or not, you’re familiar with the grind. It’s usually that period where you’re on the verge of something BIG.
Where you’re so sure something could work that you work yourself into exhaustion.
It’s that time where you fail over and over. It isn’t until later that you understand that those failures taught you something.
You may start to think the work you put in isn’t valuable. Let me assure you – there’s nothing better you could be doing.
The grind is the most important thing you’ll ever do, especially as an entrepreneur.
Grinding gives you an irreplaceable body of knowledge as your business matures. It gives you confidence. It gives you resilience.
What Is the Grind and Why Is It Important?
First, let me clarify something. Grinding for yourself and grinding for someone else are two different things.
Grinding for yourself means that you’re working without a safety net. It means you’re all you got, and you’re all you need.
When you grind for yourself, there is an inner focus to succeed. You most likely have found “your why” and use it to motivate yourself.
Grinding for yourself may be tiring, but it’s rewarding.
If you’re stuck grinding for someone else, you must shift your focus. You need to think about what you hope to achieve from your job or career.
Do you want a higher salary? Do you want a promotion? Do you want to prove your worth or have a few days of remote work each week?
Whatever it is, it’s important to define it.
Let it become “your why” on those days where you struggle.
What Is “Your Why” and Why Is It Important to “the Grind”?
“Your Why” is your inner purpose. It is your guiding light.
It’s the ambition that keeps you going when it’s midnight, and you still have work to finish. If you don’t have “a why,” you may become tempted to quit.
“Your Why” isn’t a cute saying or phrase to keep you going. It’s the purpose behind everything you do.
When you peel back the layers of yourself, it’s what drives you to want to succeed.
“Your Why” is not:
● The passion to earn more money
● The desire for a fancy new title
● The dream to buy expensive new toys
“Your Why” is much deeper than that.
For some people, their “why” can be:
● Making enough to help out their extended family
● Earning enough money, so your children never go without
● Having the chance to have your spouse retire
● Being able to help your parents retire
If you look at both of these lists, you may notice a stark contrast. Do you see it?
The first list is all about the ego and earning for yourself. The second list is all about empathy and earning for others you care about.
Often it will be what you’re willing to do for the ones you love and care about that pushes you forward.
Why You Need the Grind
It’s simple. The grind starts with trying to solve a problem. If you want to make a million dollars, solve a million people’s problems.
When you’re grinding, you’re trying to grow and learn things you don’t yet understand. Picture the grind like a butterfly coming out of a cocoon.
The hardest stage of metamorphosis is the moment they crack through the cocoon. They have to fight and crawl and pull their way out.
If you were to help the butterfly, you would stunt its growth, and it would never learn to fly. Instead, it would spend its days crawling around with warped wings.
Why?
Because that process is essential to their ability to fly. As they fight their way out, they spread fluid into their wings. That fluid helps them fly.
This is like grinding. While it’s hard, it’s essential for your growth and always teaches you something.
If you’re an entrepreneur, the lesson you learn could become a valuable skill for others.
Keep Grinding
It’s essential to find “your why” and to keep grinding. You’ll learn valuable skills that make you worth more.
